Book Review: The Sharper your Knife, The Less you Cry

Two weeks ago, I received a copy of The Sharper the Knife, The less you cry, a book that is a combination of food writing / memoir. Specifically, it chronicles one woman’s journey through culinary school at Le Cordon Bleu Paris.

Those of you who may have read my blog when I first started, may recall that I myself attended class at LCB Paris. I, however, did just one semester of Intensive Patisserie Basic, while Kathleen Flinn, the book’s author, completed the Cuisine Diploma. Although my personal dream would be to complete the Patisserie Diploma, I was still very much looking forward to reading about Kathleen’s experiences. Perhaps, it would be just the nudge I need to finally follow my dreams – an idea that I have played with in my mind occasionally.

From the day that I started the book, I found it hard to put down. It is an easy read, yet at the same time, I found it thoroughly enthralling. The descriptions of the demonstration rooms and kitchens brought back so many much-cherished memories of my time there in August 2005. In fact, as I would learn while reading the book, Kathleen and I may have crossed paths at LCB given that she completed her Superior cycle in August – November of 2005.

Although Kathleen’s book centers around her experience at culinary school, it is also at its heart a story about love, as it chronicles the progression of her relationship with her now husband – the man who encouraged her to drop everything and follow her dreams. We all need someone like that in our life and it made me remember once again why I love M so much – he, like Kathleen’s husband, has encouraged me to to re-enroll in LCB everytime I’ve brought it up.

As a bonus, Kathleen also concludes each chapter with a recipe. I’ve yet to try any of them but many of them do sound delicious!

If you’re a fan of food writing and / or are contemplating going to culinary school, I think you’ll enjoy this book.

A prolonged absence

Just a quick post to say that I will be away for a month and will not be posting as I am getting married! Yes, those of you who may have been reading my blog may recall references to the big day for M and I. Well, after many months of planning, its finally upon us. As you can imagine it is a busy but exciting time. I will, however, be back in June and look forward to rejoining TWD and the Daring Bakers, and also experimenting with new recipes.

Till then, adieu!

I'm back!

After two weeks in Asia, I'm finally back to London. My trip back home was amazing and despite the fact that I returned to a flat with no heat and hot water (boiler is on the fritz) and my bags didn't make it back with me (connecting in CDG is a nightmare), I'm still feeling the glow from a wonderful vacation.

Santa was extremely generous this Christmas and I received many, many food-related presents that will in some way or another be used on this blog. My favourite present hands-down came from M who surprised me with my very own MacBook! Readers of my blog may recall that sometime towards the early life of the blog, I managed to destroy my previous computer when I tripped over the wire and sent it crashing to the floor. Since then, I've been blogging from M's computer (a MacBook as well) and although I've always been a PC user, I quickly fell in love with the Apple's speed of booting up and its stability. Not once have I ever seen the blue screen of death on an Apple, a sight that was becoming all too common on my IBM laptop. My new MacBook is sleek and black and best of all, it comes with a magnetic power cord that automatically detaches when pressure is applied so no worries about this baby ever crashing to the floor! Needless to say, I am now blogging on my very own MacBook. Gone are the days of having to fight over the computer.

Other presents that I received, in no particular order are:
  • An Oneida cupcake carrier (Thanks to J and S)

  • A lovely cast iron pancake / blini pan (Courtesy of A and H)
  • An egg timer (Thanks again to H)
  • A foldable chopping board which eliminates spillage (from M)
  • A heart shaped oven mitt (yet again from M)
  • Cool, zebra-patterned muffin cases (also from M)
  • A nifty, electronic kitchen timer (M is really spoiling me...)

Clockwise from top left: Pancake pan, chopping board, kitchen timer, muffin cases, oven mitt and egg timer
  • A Le Creuset set consisting of 4 ramekins, a baking dish, a round cocotte and an oval cocotte

  • A 9" springform pan
  • Assorted silicone bakeware

Okay, the last 3 items were really things I bought myself but since they were bought during the holiday season, I consider them presents to myself. I can think of so many things that I can make with the different gifts I've received from souffles to cheesecakes to potato blinis to delicious cupcakes. I can't wait!

I hope everyone had a great Christmas and New Year and I'll be back soon with my first food post of 2008.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

After 11 months of being in London, I'm finally back in sunny Singapore for a well-earned (I think) Christmas and New Year's break. Even though its not a white christmas - i mean its sunny and 30 degrees celsius out - I'm spending it with my folks and that's what's its all about, isn't it? I'll probably be absent from my blog the next two weeks so here's wishing you all a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. I promise to be back in the new year with more cooking and baking adventures! Till then, eat well!

Doh!

In my last post, I had said that I was on vacation this week and hoping to make up for my lack of posts the week before. Some of you may be wondering, therefore, why I haven't updated in a quite a few days now. Reason is, in packing for my trip to Toronto, I stupidly forgot to pack my camera's USB cable so I can't upload any of my pictures... Arrgh!

I do have a few things saved up for next week including a write-up on a wonderful omakase restaurant here in Toronto, pictures from a cookie decorating that I've taken and a recipe for a crepe cake that I made for my family. Until I get back home, however, I'm afraid that there won't be much happening on this blog. Stay tuned!

I did it!

Start a food blog that is. I have debating whether to start blogging about my baking and cooking escapades for ages and have always fallen back on the age old excuse "I'm not going to have enough time." I'm still not sure how much time I will be able to devote to this but I'll take it one step at a time. I have gotten so much pleasure from reading other people's food blogs, Kuidaore, Chubby Hubby and Dessert First, to name just a new, that I finally decided to bite the bullet. I have no illusions that I'll garner as wide an audience as they have but the fun for me will come from having an excuse to bake / cook more often and the opportunity to share my escapades with friends, family and whomever else wants to read about them.

So you're probably wondering "Who is this girl anyway?" Well, I think the name of my blog says it all - I'm just a girl with an enormous passion for food! I am also a baking hobbyist, something I try to indulge in as often as I can. I did a basic patisserie certificate at Cordon Bleu in Paris but I'm still trying to improve my skills everyday! In between my adventures in baking, I dabble in cooking since you can't eat sweets everyday, or so I've been told. To top this all off, I love trying new restaurants and what better place to do that than in London, my home of about 6 months now!

Before I sign off, I thought I'd share with you a picture of a crepe cake (a la Lady M's cafe in NYC) that I made recently. I hope to be back soon with my first real post!
